Home Brewing ATU’s

At the November 2007 meeting Brian Clarke GW3HGL gave the club an insight into his passion of building Antenna Tuning Units. The talk was illustrated with diagrams of circuitry that Brian had produced for use with the overhead projector. He was then able to demonstrate the use of this circuitry on the actual ATU’s that he had brought with him. He then went on to describe and explain how he uses the ATU remotely.
Although these days the membership is small, Brian’s talk was well received with a question and answer period that was very interesting.

Thomas Telford Special Event Station

The Dragon ARC held their Special Event Station GB250TT on 9th August 2007 on the mainland side of the Menai Suspension Bridge in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Telford, Engineer. The Secretary of CVARC was very fortunate that in the course of his work he came across the station and was for a short time able to assist.

Filters used by the Arfon Repeater Group

The July 2007 meeting saw the welcomed return to the Conway Valley ARC of Brian Davies GW4KAZ. He gave the club a very interesting talk on the history of the Arfon Repeater Group, the various sites, which house their repeaters, be they Radio or Amateur Television and the subject of the talk, the filters used on the repeaters. Brian demonstrated with a spectrum analyser why they use those particular filters. With the experience gained in the making of these filters he has now started to manufacture them for sale to the radio fraternity.

Software Defined Radio

At the April 2007 meeting we were pleased that Stewart Rolfe GW0ETF from the Dragon A.R.C in Llanfair P.G. was able to come and give us a talk on Software Defined Radio. He was accompanied by two other members of Dragon Club who participated in the talk. The talk was illustrated with the aid of a power point presentation. All three member of the Dragon club had successfully built the kit for use with the SDR.

A Lifetime of Home construction

A newsletter was not produced in March 2007; therefore a more detail account of the talk given by John Lawrence GW3JGA at the February 2007 meeting was not recorded, but it was recorded later that this was a splendid talk as this is the norm of any talk given by John. This started with a one valve receiver and continued up to date with an optical transceiver. The talk, professionally given was illustrated with a Power Point presentation.

The Last filmed Voyage’s of the Seiont II

At the December 2006 meeting the members were shown a film of the last filmed Voyage of the “SEIONT II “. The speaker was Arthur GW7VHD, who actually filmed the voyage.

The Great Orme Tramway, the first 95 Years

The club meeting on Wednesday the 1st November were given an illustrated talk on the Great Orme Tramway by Mrs Rosemary Sutton, who for a number of years was the General Manager. During her period of stewardship most of the system was overhauled.
She explained that one of the most asked questions about the Tramcars is regarding the numbering of them. The cars are numbered 3, 4 & 5. The questions relate to ‘what happened to 1 & 2’, the answer was that they were luggage cars, used for haulage, cargo etc. They have long since been disposed of.

Bletchley Park DVD

The members who attended the club meeting on Wednesday the 4th October 2006 saw an excellent DVD lent by George GW3EIR on the work carried out at Bletchley Park and by “Secret Listeners” throughout the country, one of whom was George.
In addition to the DVD members were given a preview into a project in the making by John Lawrence GW3JGA. The project is into communication with a light beam. He brought with him his proposed transmitter and receiver, although he admitted it was not yet completed and would keep the club informed on its progress.

Maplin’s Electronic Store

In September 2006 the club welcomed for the first time Mr Rob Kelly from Maplin’s Electronic Store in Llandudno. Rob discussed the black box products available in the new catalogue, which has just become available. He then answered questions regarding other items of interest to Amateur Radio included in the catalogue. Members were very appreciative of his talk.

Wales Air Ambulance

Nearly twelve months ago, in October 2005 we had a speaker, Angela Hughes, Chief Executive of Wales Air Ambulance Charity Fund, who came and gave us a very enlighten talk. In the course of that talk she intimated that we could visit the helicopter base for the Air Ambulance based in North Wales. However this was on the understanding that it may not be there due to operational reasons.
As members are aware in the month of August we are unable to use ‘The Studio’ due to the Summer Art Exhibition staged by the Denbighshire Art Society.
